The former England captain stepped down from his role at Surrey Cricket Club last year in order to support his other half

Lynn Stewart, wife of England cricket legend Alec Stewart, has died after a 12-year battle with breast cancer.

The former England captain had stepped down from his role as Director of Surrey Cricket Club several months ago to spend more time with his wife before she died.


This morning at The Oval, where Surrey are playing Hampshire in the county championship, flags were flying high in tribute.

The cricket world has begun to pay respects to the Stewart family following the sad news.

Surrey County Cricket Club Chair Oli Slipper shared a heartfelt tribute to Lynn Stewart.

He said: "The sincere condolences of everyone at Surrey County Cricket Club are with Alec and the whole Stewart family."

"Our very best wishes are with the family and we will continue to offer any support to them that we are able to."

Slipper also requested privacy for the family during this difficult period.

"In the meantime, we ask that people respect their privacy at this difficult time," he added.

The club has been a significant part of Alec Stewart's career both as a player and in his directorial role.

Cricket fans have also paid tribute to Lynn on social media.

One wrote: "Such sad news. May her soul rest in eternal peace."

Another fan stated: "Oh that's most sad news....We must pay tribute to Mrs Stewart in the only way we know how, by playing on in her game and for the gaffer...Thoughts with Alec and his family..."

"Utmost sympathy & condolences to Alec & family. Such sad news. God bless," wrote a third.

Another simply added: "Tragic news. Best wishes to all."

Essex Cricket also offered their condolences, saying: "Condolences to Alec and the whole of the Stewart family from everyone at Essex Cricket."

Stewart had explained his decision to step down from his Surrey role last year.

"I love this job and it's probably the toughest decision I've made," he said.

"The main reason is my wife has battled cancer for the last 12 years and I've always promised her from when I packed in playing that I will give her some of my time."

Stewart had indicated he still wanted to remain involved in cricket despite stepping back from his position.

"Probably by mid-January next year she will be fed up with me and I will be looking for a job," he had added with characteristic humour.
