A red card for Lauren James, two woodworks hit for Nigeria, and multiple missed penalties, England’s round of 16 fixture against Nigeria was spellbinding to say the least

The round of 16 fixture between the defending European champions, England and nine-time African champions Nigeria ended in a penalty shootout after a goalless draw in 120 minutes.

England went on to beat Nigeria 4-2 on penalties.

It was an evenly contested side with Nigeria going the closest to the scoresheet, meanwhile England were reduced to 10 players following a red card but held on to claim a win thanks to a Chloe Kelly penalty.

The Lionesses had a chance to get a goal just past the half-hour mark after Rachel Daly went down in the Nigeria box following a bit of an elbow nudge in the back from Atletico Atlético Madrid Femenino forward Rasheedat Ajibade, but the VAR ruled the challenge was not a penalty.

Despite efforts from Daly and other England attackers, the Nigerian backline held firm.

Chiamaka Nnadozie made several good saves to stop efforts from Alessia Russo.

The nine times African champions found themselves back in the game and hit the woodwork twice with efforts from Ashleigh Plumptre and Uchenna Kanu.

England's Lauren James, who had been a standout player with three goals and three assists in the group stage, was shown a yellow card which was changed to a red card after a VAR review for stepping on Nigeria's Michelle Alozie.

The Lionesses though, held on for another 30 minutes in extra time to get a penalty shootout, which they won 4-2.

In spite of England’s win, it’s been a tournament full of shocks and Sarina Wiegman will be happy to have overcome a Nigerian side that pushed them to the very limit.
