Tyson Fury retired from boxing earlier this year in a shock announcement following two losses to Oleksandr Usyk

Veteran boxing promoter Bob Arum believes Tyson Fury will not return to the ring, despite the British heavyweight's history of reversing retirement decisions.

The 36-year-old Fury announced his retirement in January following consecutive defeats to Oleksandr Usyk.

Speaking to the BBC 5 Live Boxing podcast with Steve Bunce, Arum was unequivocal about Fury's future.

"If I was a betting man I would say he will never fight again," said the American promoter who has worked with Fury in the past.

Fury's decision to hang up his gloves came just weeks after suffering his second successive loss to Ukrainian champion Oleksandr Usyk.

These defeats in Saudi Arabia, occurring in May and December last year, brought an end to Fury's impressive 15-year unbeaten streak as a professional.

The Manchester-born fighter had previously announced retirement on multiple occasions, including in 2013, 2016 and 2017.

Each time, the British heavyweight champion eventually reversed his decision and returned to the sport.

Arum elaborated on his reasoning by referencing a famous boxing quote.

"Marvin Hagler had an expression - 'a rich guy who goes to bed wearing silk pyjamas doesn't get up in the morning to do road work'," Arum told the podcast.

The veteran promoter suggested Fury lacks the economic motivation to endure the rigours of training.

"Tyson, really, I don't think wants to get up in the morning and do road work and go through the experience of having to train when economically he doesn't have to do it any more."

Fury's professional record stands at 34 wins, one draw and two defeats - both losses coming against Usyk.

The Briton first became world champion in 2015 by defeating Wladimir Klitschko for the WBA and WBO belts in Germany.

He later relinquished his titles whilst struggling with mental health issues and facing doping charges, which he strenuously denied.

After successfully reapplying for his boxing licence, Fury announced his comeback in early 2018.

He went on to claim the WBC belt by stopping Deontay Wilder in their second fight in 2020.

Despite his retirement announcement, speculation about Fury's return has persisted after footage emerged of him working out in his personal gym.

Promoter Eddie Hearn recently suggested that the long-awaited domestic showdown between Fury and Anthony Joshua could still happen.

Hearn told iFL TV: "The way that fight gets made is probably Tyson reaches out to AJ and says, 'Mate, do you fancy it?'"

"And he'll go, '100 per cent, let's f***ing do it.' And it'll be made like that. So let's see."
