Tyson Fury surprised the boxing world when he announced his retirement on social media last month

When Tyson Fury retired from boxing, fans from around the world were left puzzled and questioning why.

Speculation has grown over whether it was down to failed negotiations with Anthony Joshua and his promoter Eddie Hearn over a potential fight this year.

While some also wondered whether Fury, at the age of 36, simply had enough of the sport.

But speaking to Action Network, former super-middleweight champion Carl Froch has inside knowledge on why the Gypsy King decided to hang up his gloves for the last time.

After being asked about Fury's retirement, the 47-year-old said: "It’s like a lot of boxers.

"He has retired because deep down he knows he is probably past his best and lost two fights (to Oleksandr Usyk) and I know personally he is p*****.

"I spoke to somebody close to his team and he’s really frustrated and p***** off that he lost the rematch but he did lose and lost fair and square.

"It was a close fight but it wasn’t very entertaining, not like the first one where there were moments of excitement, and not a lot happened.

"I think Usyk did enough to win. He shouldn’t have any complaints apart from the frustration that he didn’t go for it.

"I thought at some stages Fury could have really gone for it towards the end and I was thinking ‘come on Fury, go and stick it on him’.

"Did he not have it in him or did he think he had done enough to win?

"For me, I wouldn’t be happy when my head hits the pillow losing like that. Even when I lost to Andre Ward on the scorecards it was close but it wasn’t a close fight.

"I lost by a wide margin on points in my mind despite two of the scorecards being 115-113 to Ward."
