The former heavyweight world champion made the shock decision to retire on Monday

Tyson Fury has announced his shock retirement from boxing via social media on Monday afternoon - and he could be set for a new role in the sport.

The former heavyweight champion posted a video message to fans, bringing an end to his illustrious career in the ring.

"Hi everybody, I'm going to make this short and sweet," Fury said in the video.

"I'd like to announce my retirement from boxing, it has been a blast, I've loved every single minute of it and I'm going to end with this; Dick Turpin wore a mask."

The 36-year-old accompanied his video with a caption reading: "Thanks it's been a blast.

"Thanks to everyone who helped out along the way! Happy new year. Jesus is king now & forever."

Fury's retirement comes just over two weeks after suffering his second career defeat to Oleksandr Usyk.

The 'Gypsy King' had maintained an undefeated record in professional boxing until his first loss to Usyk via split decision in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in May 2024.

His second defeat came on December 21, when the Ukrainian fighter once again emerged victorious on points.

These losses marked a dramatic turn in Fury's career, which now stands at 34 wins, one draw and two losses from 37 professional contests.

A potential all-British clash with Anthony Joshua had been suggested, but appears unlikely following his retirement announcement.

Kristian Blacklock, Fury's long-time strength and conditioning coach, has outlined several potential career paths for the retired boxer.

"I can't imagine him ever being completely outside of boxing; it could be in so many different ways," Blacklock told SPORTbible in December.

"He's a very intelligent guy, especially with the boxing, his knowledge is unbelievable with the boxing," he added.

Blacklock suggested Fury could transition into various roles within the sport.

"He could be anything from a commentator to a coach, he could go into management, he could do anything he wanted to really," said Blacklock.

According to Forbes calculations from May 2024, Fury's net worth stood at $50m before his final bout.

This figure is likely to have increased substantially following his second fight against Usyk, which reportedly earned him £63.7m.

Blacklock noted that Fury's financial success means he has complete freedom over his future endeavours.

"But he doesn't have to [work again]. Obviously, he has had a very successful career. He's got himself into a position where he could pick and choose what he does after boxing," Blacklock said.

While Fury's future remains open, Blacklock expressed doubts about a potential move to MMA.

"I can't see it [an MMA bout]," Blacklock explained. "Maybe some sort of exhibition in the future, I don't know. I can't see Tyson having an MMA fight in the near future, but you just never know, do you?

"Despite speculation about his next move, Fury's legacy in British boxing is already secured.

He will be remembered as one of Britain's most decorated boxers, likely to be ranked among the country's top three heavyweights alongside Lennox Lewis and Anthony Joshua.
