Conor McGregor appears to be closing in on a return with talks underway.

Conor McGregor has revealed he is in preliminary talks to stage an exhibition boxing match against Logan Paul in India, with the bout set to be backed by the influential Ambani family.

The former UFC champion made the announcement on social media, marking a potential return to combat sports after a lengthy absence from competition.

The proposed exhibition would pit McGregor against Paul, who is the brother of social media star Jake Paul, in what would be a high-profile event on the Indian subcontinent.

McGregor has not stepped into competitive action for more than three years, following a devastating leg break in his trilogy fight against Dustin Poirier.

The Irish fighter's planned comeback was initially set for this summer in a bout against Michael Chandler.

However, that return was derailed when McGregor withdrew from the contest just two weeks before the scheduled date due to a broken toe.

Taking to social media, McGregor explicitly dismissed speculation about a potential fight with UFC featherweight champion Ilia Topuria.

"The rumours of a bout with Topuria are false. I am in preliminary agreements with the Ambani family to face Logan Paul in a exhibition in India. I have agreed," McGregor stated.

The Irish fighter added that following the proposed exhibition match, he would "seek my return to the Octagon."

McGregor's announcement comes amid recent controversy surrounding the fighter's legal affairs.

Last month, the former champion was found to have sexually assaulted Nikita Hand at a Dublin hotel eight years ago.

The court ordered McGregor to pay £200,000 to the victim.

These developments, combined with his extended absence from competition and the cancelled Chandler bout, had cast doubt over McGregor's fighting future.

The proposed exhibition match in India appears to signal McGregor's intention to return to combat sports, albeit initially outside the UFC's octagon.
