The Gunners have started the new season on a positive note

Arsenal have beaten Manchester City to win the Community Shield following a dramatic penalty shootout.

Cole Palmer put the treble winners ahead in the 77th minute, with the 21-year-old curling a stunning strike into the top corner.

It looked as though that would be the only goal of the game at Wembley.

However, Arsenal then levelled in the 101st minute with Leandro Trossard's shot deflecting off Manuel Akanji and past Stefan Ortega into the net.

Mikel Arteta celebrated wildly and the match then went to penalties.

And Kevin De Bruyne missed from the spot, with Arsenal converting all of their spot-kicks to reign supreme and secure the first trophy of the new season.

No Arsenal player will be more relieved than Kai Havertz, with the Germany international previously spurning two efforts to put his side ahead.

Ortega was able to deny the former Chelsea star on both occasions, with the 30-year-old starting in place of Ederson.

City went close twice through Rodri.

The Spain international saw a shot just sail wide of Aaron Ramsdale's goal, with the midfielder then narrowly missing with a lob.

Palmer's goal was a sensational one, with the 21-year-old brilliantly curling a shot into the top corner.

The academy graduate celebrated wildly but Arsenal were able to get back into the game late on when Trossard, who joined from Brighton in January, struck.

The match then went to penalties and it was Arsenal who kept their cool, scoring all four of their spot-kicks to clinch the trophy.

City star Kevin De Bruyne hit the crossbar with his penalty, having sent Ramsdale the wrong way.

And Rodri also fluffed his lines from 12 yards, with Arsenal star Fabio Vieira then scoring to spark wild celebrations in the red end.

Neither side will have too long to dwell on the result, with both teams set to kick off their Premier League campaigns next weekend.

City will face Burnley at Turf Moor on Friday night.

They'll also be reunited with former captain Vincent Kompany, who won four Premier League titles during his time at the Etihad Stadium.

As for Arsenal, the Gunners are set to begin their season when they face off against Nottingham Forest at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday.
