The Princess Royal has not undertaken any royal engagements since suffering the injuries

Zara Tindall is playing an "active role" in helping Princess Anne recover after she spent five days in hospital following a head injury.

The Princess Royal is said to be "receiving rehabilitation" following an incident involving a horse last month.

Her daughter Zara and husband Mike are thought to be "coordinating the medical visits" to help Anne recover as comfortably as possible.

It is believed the royal is "slowly recovering" at home in Gatcombe Park, Gloucestershire.

It remains unclear what happened to the Princess as her concussion prevented her from remembering.

Her medical team suggest her injuries are consistent with possible impact from a horse's head or legs.

The incident occurred on the evening of June 23.

Anne's husband Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence travelled with her to the hospital and has since been caring for her.

"Anne is receiving home rehabilitation. Tim and Zara are helping coordinate the medical visits and make sure she has everything she needs," a source told The Express.

They added: "Zara is taking an active role in helping her mother recover from the accident.

"The Tindalls live a stone’s throw away [on the Gatcombe Park estate], so Zara is always on hand to pop over to make sure Anne has everything she needs.

"Mike and the grandchildren also make regular visits to make sure that everything is kept as 'normal' as possible for Anne. Tim is also proving a great support."

The Princess Royal has been forced to call off a number of engagements as she recovers.

Last month she did not appear at the Japanese State Banquet hosted for Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako.

She also cancelled her trip to Canada for a First World War commemoration event.

In a statement, the royal said she was left "deeply saddened" about missing the event.
