The King and his niece Zara appeared at the royal horse show on the grounds of Windsor Castle

Zara Tindall gave King Charles an affectionate hug during the Royal Windsor Horse Show on Friday.

The monarch and his niece looked in high spirits today as they happily embraced each other at the equestrian event.

The monarch wore a beige raincoat over a white shirt and blue and green striped tie as he watched the endurance phase of the competition.

The Royal Windsor Horse Show was one of the late Queen Elizabeth's favourite events which she commonly attended since it was established in 1943.

Zara wore a matching grey blazer and trouser suit over a black high-neck sweater matched with a cross-body bag with a metal chain.

She wore her hair in a low ponytail and accessorised with some simple gold hoop earrings and a natural make-up look.

The King was pictured grinning with his niece, who are known to share a very close relationship, and speaking to staff members at the event.

Several other Royal Family members have attended the Royal Windsor Horse Show this year including the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh and Princess Anne.

Last week it was confirmed that the King would be returning to royal duties as he continues cancer treatment.

The King is understood to be performing public engagements subject to his doctors' advice.

The Royal Windsor Horse Show is a beloved occasion for many of the Royal Family members who have a keen interest in horses.

Zara is a decorated equestrian and won a silver medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics.

The late Queen Elizabeth II shared a love of horses with Zara and would often cheer on her husband Prince Philip, and watch her horses compete.

On Thursday, Sophie and her husband, Prince Edward attended the second day of the horse show in matching olive blazers.

Sophie matched her outfit with a white shirt, a Vince maxi leather black skirt and brown, knee-high boots.

She brightened her country chic look with a silk Hermes multicoloured scarf tied around her low ponytail.
