Thousands of royal fans could face getting soaked if they turn up to the Trooping the Colour event this weekend

King Charles's birthday plans are in turmoil as forecasters have warned that there could be a downpour of rain on the Mall.

People going to watch the annual event may need to take their waterproof jackets and umbrellas as weather experts have warned that there could be showers during the parade.

The Met Office has warned that there is a 40 per cent chance of rain at 10am on Saturday, just as the event is getting started.

The prediction for the weekend is: "Unsettled and often breezy with variable cloud and scattered showers or longer spells of rain.

"Some of the showers will be heavy and perhaps thundery. Temperatures slowly recovering, locally warm."

This could mean that the parade could get off to a bit of a wet start with downpours throughout the day.

Even though it could be raining, it seems that King Charles is still very much looking forward to the event.

After he inspected the guardsmen and officers on parade on Monday afternoon he said: “It has been a remarkable 84 years since my grandfather, King George VI, presented new Colours to the Second Battalion Irish Guards in Wellington Barracks during the opening months of the Second World War.

“After that terrible war, whose anniversaries we are in the midst of commemorating, the Second Battalion was placed in suspended animation but, I am delighted to say, has been reinstated.”

The King is expected to have a busy weekend as he celebrates his birthday with Trooping the Colour and his annual birthday parade.

Charles has also been undergoing treatment since he was diagnosed with a form of cancer and has recently returned to royal duties.

The type of cancer King Charles has been diagnosed with has not been disclosed.

Some allowances have been made for his health and at the Trooping the Colour event this weekend he will be inspecting the soldiers from a carriage, rather than on horseback.

It is unconfirmed whether or not Charles's daughter-in-law Princess Kate will appear at the event.

The princess is thought to be "considering" an appearance on the balcony but "only if she is well enough."

Sources told the outlet that the mother of three may join other senior royals to witness the traditional RAF Flypast after the ceremony but it is unlikely that this will be confirmed until nearer the time.
