Marius Borg Hoiby, the eldest son of Norwegian Crown Princess Mette-Marit, is to be released from custody after his arrest last week following rape allegations.

Norwegian police arrested the stepson of the Crown Prince of Norway at an address near Skaugum, the royal estate where Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit reside, but has since been released.

In a statement, police said that Borg Høiby was arrested on suspicion of violating the criminal code "which concerns sexual intercourse with someone who is unconscious or for other reasons unable to resist the act."

This was the third time Borg Høiby has been arrested since August.

More preliminary charges have since been filed against Borg Hoiby, including violating several restraining orders and driving without a valid driver's license.

The cases all involve four women and one man.

Borg Hoiby was first arrested after a late-night incident at a woman's apartment in Oslo on August 4 this year.

The 27-year-old was accused of "physically and psychologically" assaulting the resident in her twenties, who police said had been in a relationship with the royal, and causing damage to her home.

Borg Høiby spent 30 hours in police custody following the arrest.

The royal was arrested a second time in September for allegedly contacting a victim from a hidden phone number despite a restraining order being in place.

After eight police interviews earlier this month, Borg Høiby issued a statement denying that he assaulted two of his former girlfriends, Nora Haukland and Juliane Snekkestad.

Despite this, the royal did admit causing one woman bodily harm while under the influence of cocaine and alcohol and damaging her apartment. He said he regretted the incident.

Borg Høiby is the son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit from her previous relationship with Morten Borg.

He received much media attention as the first step-child in the history of the Norwegian Royal Family.
