The mother-of-two visited Picton Barracks in Wiltshire on Friday

The Duchess of Edinburgh displayed her calm demeanour during a visit to Picton Barracks in Wiltshire this morning.

In her role as Royal Colonel, Sophie, 59, presided over a homecoming parade for the 5th Battalion of The Rifles following their six-month deployment in Estonia.

The highlight of her visit came when she fearlessly plucked a spider from an officer's shirt, sharing a lighthearted moment and exchanging smiles with the soldier.

This gesture showcased the duchess's approachable nature and ability to connect with military personnel.

For her visit to the military camp, the duchess opted for a familiar ensemble.

She wore a purple and pink coat dress from Erdem, a favourite designer brand among the Royal Family.

Sophie had previously worn this dress at the Royal Family's Christmas service in Sandringham in 2017 and during an official visit to Latvia in 2018.

The duchess accessorised her recycled outfit with earrings that complemented her dress, a gold necklace, and beige pumps. Her hair was styled in an elegant, low bun.

During her visit, the Duchess of Edinburgh engaged warmly with the soldiers' families.

In a particularly touching moment, she handed out mini-medals to the children present at the homecoming parade.

Sophie also inspected the Guard of Honour and delivered a speech to the assembled troops and their loved ones.

Her interactions demonstrated her commitment to her role as Royal Colonel and her ability to connect with both military personnel and their families.

The duchess's visit to Picton Barracks is part of her increasingly busy schedule of royal engagements.

She has been stepping up to fill the gap left by other senior royals facing health challenges.

Sophie's royal duties have significantly increased in recent months.

The number of her engagements has more than doubled this September compared to the same period last year, with 37 completed so far versus 18 in 2023.

The duchess is set to make an appearance on CBeebies Bedtime Story segment next week, reading 'Specs for Rex' by Yasmeen Ismail to mark World Sight Day.
