Today, July 1, would have been Diana's 63rd birthday

Sarah Ferguson has issued a touching statement to her “dear friend” Princess Diana on what would have been her 63rd birthday.

The Duchess of York shared a snap of the pair standing stand-by-side on the balcony of Buckingham Palace in 1990.

She wrote: “Happy birthday to my dear friend, Diana. You were a pillar of light and love. And what a legacy you have left behind. I will forever remember our laughter and the kindred, kind spirit I found in you.

“I am sure you are watching over us always. Rest in peace my friend.”

Fergie and Diana were snapped on the balcony as they commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Britain over thirty years ago.

The pair became royal sisters-in-law through their respective marriages to the future King Charles and Prince Andrew, but had been close friends since they were teenagers.

“We promised each other we would always be together – there was never any daylight between us,” Fergie told People magazine in 2021.

“But everybody wanted that because we were so strong together. People want to break something so strong.”

Fergie said the two were “best friends”, and she affectionately called the late Princess “Duch” as a sweet nickname.

“She taught me so much of public life. She was so brave. We used to have the most incredible time together,” she added.

Last year, Fergie spoke fondly of Diana on her podcast, stating that the late Princess “never understood how brilliant she was really, you know, and together we both didn’t. And I used to hug her but she wouldn’t understand”.

She added: “There was nobody like [Diana] in the world because she had that ability to give her entire heart because she didn’t give her entire heart to herself.”

In 2021, on what would have been Diana’s 60th birthday, her sons Prince William and Harry unveiled a new statue of their late mother at Kensington Palace.

“Today, on what would have been our Mother's 60th birthday, we remember her love, strength and character – qualities that made her a force for good around the world, changing countless lives for the better,” the brothers said in a joint statement.

“Every day, we wish she were still with us, and our hope is that this statue will be seen forever as a symbol of her life and her legacy.”
