The Duchess of York underwent an eight-hour procedure in June after she was diagnosed with breast cancer

Sarah Ferguson has named her reconstructed breast “Derek” after undergoing a single mastectomy operation to treat her cancer diagnosis.

Fergie revealed the nickname during an appearance on her podcast Tea Talks, adding she is “just coming to terms with my new best friend Derek”.

The 63-year-old added: “On my left, he’s called Derek … and he’s very important because he saved my life.”

The Duchess of York was asked by friend and co-host Sarah Thomson why she chose the name.

She said: “I don’t know, it just made me laugh that I have now a friend who’s with me all the time who’s protecting with his shield of armour.”

Fergie also revealed she is “getting much better” but does not expect to be travelling for a month.

The mother-of-two, who divorced Prince Andrew in 1996, appeared to allude to the name of her other breast.

She said: “Poor Eric on the right is feeling rather sad because he’s not as perky as Derek on the left, but I’ll get Eric balanced, don’t worry.”

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

Fergie underwent her cancer operation at King Edward VII’s Hospital in London.

The Duchess has since been encouraging women to get screened regularly after her diagnosis was detected during a routine mammogram.

The Ferguson family have been affected by cancer over the past few years.

Major Ronald Ferguson, Sarah’s father, was diagnosed with both prostate and skin cancer.

Her stepfather Hector Barrantes was only 51-years-old when he died.

The Argentine polo player underwent several procedures to treat his cancer of the lymph glands.

Tragedy close to home inspired the Duchess to get involved with leading cancer charities.

During the 40-minute episode the Duchess also said she is missing her four grandchildren who are away with her daughters Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice for the summer holidays.

Discussing sharing the grandchildren, she said: “I worry for Jack [Brooksbank] and Edo’s [Mapelli Mozzi] mum’s, thinking, ‘Oh gosh, they’re always here. Oh no, I must share.’”
