The Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped down as senior members of the Royal Family in 2020

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle undertook a successful tour of Nigeria from Friday to Sunday last week.

The couple carried out multiple engagements in Abuja and Lagos during their three-day visit.

As the Sussexes are not working members of the Royal Family, their visit to Nigeria was not classed as a royal tour.

However, it had been dubbed a quasi-royal tour by some commentators, due to the similarities their visit shared with previous royal tours and the couple's link to the monarchy.

Meghan and Harry's impact in the Commonwealth country, during their visit, was widely praised and the Sussexes outlined a desire to conduct similar overseas engagements in a statement following their trip.

A statement on the couple's official website said: "The Duke and Duchess would like to extend their deepest gratitude to all the event organizers, military officials and the whole Nigerian community for their tremendous hospitality and the first of many memorable trips."

Prince Harry also attended multiple engagements linked to his Invictus Games in London last week.

The Duke of Sussex travelled back to the UK to give a reading at St Paul's Cathedral on Wednesday.

Harry did not see King Charles during the trip due to the monarch having a full diary of engagements across the two days his son was in the UK.

The Royal Family currently has a shortage of working members of the monarchy.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle left the Firm in 2020 and moved to the US.

Prince Andrew stepped down as a working royal in November 2019 following his disastrous Newsnight interview with Emily Maitlis.

Princess Kate is currently not undertaking royal duties as she focuses on her health after being diagnosed with cancer.

King Charles has only recently returned to public-facing duties after being diagnosed with cancer in February 2024.

With that in mind, should King Charles let Harry and Meghan be part-time working members of the monarchy?
