Queen Elizabeth II's childhood friend has lashed out at Meghan Markle, claiming "she had no idea" what it entailed to be a member of the Royal Family.

Lady Glenconnor was one of the late Queen's six maids of honour at the 1953 Coronation and also Princess Margaret's lady-in-waiting.

Speaking on the Rosebud with Gyles Brandreth podcast, Lady Glenconner said: "I think the thing about Meghan was, she had no idea what was expected of her really.

"I think she just thought it was sort of like being another actress, you know.

"Riding around in a golden coach and everything like that.

"And actually, being a member of the Royal Family - a lot of it is extremely boring."

At the King's Coronation, Lady Glenconnor sat next to the American politician John Kerry, 79.

The royal insider asked him: "What do you think in America about Harry and Meghan?"

Lady Glenconnor continued: "He said, 'We all feel very, very sorry for Harry. I think I can just leave it at that.'"

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex met in 2016 and married two years later in Windsor Castle.

In January 2020, the pair stepped down as working members of the Royal Family.

They subsequently left the UK, and signed major media deals with Netflix and Spotify, although they have since parted company with the latter.

Harry and Meghan live in California and have been critical of the monarchy on several occasions.

As well as releasing an explosive Netflix documentary last year where they spoke in depth about being subjected to criticism as working royals, the Duke of Sussex has penned an autobiography titled Spare.

In addition, the couple sat down for a bombshell Oprah Winfrey interview in March 2021.

They are parents to two children: Prince Archie, four, and Princess Lilibet, two.
