Kensington Palace has confirmed that the Prince of Wales will not travel to Australia

Princess Kate has been issued an urgent plea ahead of the Women's World Cup final.

England's Lionesses will face off against Spain on Sunday in the final match of the tournament.

Queen Letizia of Spain has confirmed that she will travel to Australia to support her national team in person.

The Royal Family is facing calls for a senior member of the monarchy to attend the final on Sunday to support the Lionesses in their pursuit of the World Cup.

Prince William is the President of the Football Association (FA) and he issued his public support for the Lionesses after their semi-final triumph over hosts Australia.

However, Kensington Palace has confirmed that the Prince of Wales will not travel to Australia for the final.

Royal commentator Christopher Wilson took to X to caller on the Princess of Wales to attend the match following Queen Letizia's decision.

Wilson wrote: "Oops... own goal from Team Windsor. But it's not too late to book your ticket, #Kate - the Lionesses need your support".

He added: "In the end Spain will have a royal supporter there, the #Lionsses won't. At a time like this diplomatic considerations come second to world optics - currently, the royal score is Spain 1, England 0."

Sources have claimed that Prince William's decision not to attend was based on the long flight to Australia for a relatively short period of time.

Mark Bullingham, chief executive of the FA, said it was known the Prince would not be able to attend because of logistical constraints.

He said: "We always knew that he couldn’t."

Bullingham continued: "He came to see the team and wished them well before they left.

"He sent various messages of support and he was really upfront that, even if we made the final, he unfortunately couldn’t make it. It just sadly wasn’t to be.

"I know he’s committed to the Lionesses, as he is to the England men as well.

"He came to see them before they flew and was explicit in the fact he couldn’t fly."
