Princess Marie of Denmark will remain in the US for her brother-in-law Crown Prince Frederik's historic accession, it has been confirmed.
The princess, who tied the knot with Prince Joachim of Denmark in 2008, will instead watch the ceremony from her home in the United States.
A statement from the royal palace's press officer shared that Marie will stay in Washington, where the couple now live.
Prince Joachim lives in the US where he works as an attaché to the Ministry of Defence.

The palace spokesperson also confirmed that the pair's children will not be attending.
They said: "Prince Joachim will be there, but the children go to school, there is no special reason."
The statement added that Joachim would leave Denmark the following day.
Queen Margrethe decided to strip Joachim and Marie's children of their HRH titles in late 2022.

They are now known as the counts and countesses of Monpezat.
The change affected Joachim and Marie's two children, Henrik, 14, and Athena, 11, as well as the sons the prince shares with his ex-wife Alexandra, Nikolai, 24 and Felix, 21.
Speaking at the time, Joachim made an unprecedented public statement about his mother's decision: "We are all very sad.
"It's never fun to see your children being mistreated like that. They themselves find themselves in a situation they do not understand."

The Queen later apologised for the confusion, although her grandchildren retain their places in the line of succession.
Sunday's event will see Mette Frederiksen, the Danish Prime Minister, proclaim King Frederik X as the new monarch from the balcony of Christianborg Palace.
It comes after Queen Margrethe announced her abdication on December 31.
She said in her New Year's Eve speech: "I have decided that now is the right time. January 14 , 2024 – 52 years after I followed my beloved father – I will step back as the Queen of Denmark. I leave the throne to my son the Crown Prince Frederik."
