Prince William and Prince Harry's former bodyguard, Graham Craker, has died aged 77.

He served as the princes' protection officer at the time of their mother's death in 1997.

The brothers affectionately nicknamed him "Crackers", a detail Prince Harry shared in his memoir Spare.

Craker walked with William and Harry behind Princess Diana's hearse as it made its way from St James's Palace to Westminster Abbey for her funeral.

He then accompanied the princess on her final journey to Althorp House, where she is buried.

Footage from the day showed Craker having to repeatedly clear flowers from the windscreen of the hearse.

These were thrown by thousands of mourners lining the route.

In his memoir, Prince Harry wrote: "The driver had to keep pulling over so the bodyguard could get out and clear the flowers off the windscreen."

The Duke of Sussex added: "The bodyguard was Graham. Willy and I liked him a lot. We always called him Crackers. We thought that was hysterical."

Craker was also pictured with the princes during a family trip to Alton Towers in April 1994.

In an interview after Diana's death, Craker recalled the moment he learned of the tragedy while at Balmoral with the Royal Family.

He said: "I crept down the stairs to the house phone and dialled the duty office at Buckingham Palace.

He described his "disbelief" upon learning the Princess had died.

Craker shared a poignant encounter with Prince William the following morning.

"I saw William walking his dog outside, and I walked up to him and said, 'I'm very, very sorry to hear your bad news'. William very sadly said, 'Thank you'."

Craker was later a guest at William and Kate's 2011 wedding.

Craker spent 35 years in the Metropolitan Police, with 15 years serving as a royal bodyguard until his retirement in 2001.

The late Queen Elizabeth II made him a Member of the Royal Victorian Order for his services to the royal family.

Speaking on Diana's funeral, he once said: "William was comforted I was with his mum on her final journey."
