The chainsaw comment came as Kate expertly used a nail gun to attach wooden tiles to a community food bank fridge surround.
Shown a small work station where Tom Nelson was making a new surround for the community food bank fridge, the royal couple agreed to try their hand with a nail gun.
William went first, taking time to smell the wood and ask what type it was before successfully firing several nails.
He then handed the tool to Kate with a warning not to pull the trigger prematurely, "otherwise our trip will be remembered for all the wrong reasons."

The Princess crouched down and added her tiles with apparent ease.
It was at this moment that she casually mentioned: "I've been given a chainsaw" for Christmas.
An onlooker named Banjo was clearly impressed by Kate's handiwork, turning to William and asking: "What can't she do!"
William, seemingly accustomed to his wife's practical abilities during public engagements, simply replied: "That always happens."
The exchange highlighted the Princess's willingness to engage in hands-on activities during royal visits.
Her revelation about owning a chainsaw and comfortable use of the nail gun demonstrated a practical side to the royal that the public rarely glimpses.
The couple appeared relaxed as they participated in the community project, with Kate showing no hesitation in getting involved with the construction task.
