King Charles and Queen Camilla will host their families at Sandringham estate

Royal Correspondent Michael Cole has outlined the key changes for Christmas Day in the Royal Family household, as King Charles prepares to host festivities at Sandringham.

Following the death of Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022, King Charles will host the annual royal celebrations for the family at the estate with Queen Camilla.

In a huge change from the usual royal protocol, Queen Camilla's extended family will for the first time be invited to join the senior royals in their celebrations.

In previous years, when Queen Elizabeth II was reigning Monarch, Camilla would leave the royal celebrations and travel to her home in Wiltshire, where she would continue her festivities with her own family.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are not expected to be attending the family celebrations, after reports emerged that the couple had "not been invited" by the King and Queen.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex had denied the reports via their sources, and stated that they would "love" to spend their Christmas at Sandringham with the family.

Speaking to GB News, Royal Correspondent Michael Cole said the King will be taking a more "upbeat approach" to this year's holiday.

He added that the focus of this year's King's Speech on Christmas Day will reflect on his conservation work, and will feature a message on tackling climate change.

Cole revealed: "I think it will be an upbeat message. But it wouldn't be His Majesty the King, Charles, without concerns about the environment, about global warming and about the many, many people in this world who live under oppressive regimes and the human spirit being crushed by that.

"So I think it will be an interesting King's Speech. He will have written it himself.

"One of the things that he will have felt bucked about this last year is his speech which he also wrote at the recent climate conference in Dubai.

"That was received extraordinarily well, even though The Crown, the last six episodes, were released more or less at the same time he was getting up to make this keynote speech. So it will be very, very important."

Cole then highlighted the key differences between this year's celebrations and the usual celebrations hosted by Queen Elizabeth II.

He explained: "It's going to be very different in subtle but sustaining ways. In previous years, when she was the Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla tended to leave after the big day and go down to her house in Wiltshire and she then had Christmas with her family.

"But of course, now she is Queen Camilla, her children and her grandchildren will be at Sandringham House. It's going to be a bit of a squeeze.

"We may remember that Prince Harry complained on one occasion that he had a very small bedroom and he took this as a grave insult. So it's going to be a quite tight house party. The interesting thing is, it will be slightly less formal than it was because the Queen was a stickler for protocol, and this will be more relaxed."
