Queen Mary of Denmark has stunned royal watchers by wearing historical jewels that has not been seen in public for over 140 years.

The Danish Queen debuted the precious pieces during a state banquet in Finland, where she is currently on a two-day visit with King Frederik.

The royal couple were hosted by Finnish President Alexander Stubb and his wife Suzanne Innes-Stubb at the Presidential Palace in Helsinki on Tuesday evening.

The gold diadem worn by Queen Mary was created around 1820 for Queen Caroline Amalie, who was married to Christian VIII, regent of Denmark from 1839 to 1848.

The palace explained that the tiara features 11 gems collected by Caroline Amalie's husband during the couple's trip to Italy between 1819-1821.

Queen Mary also wore Princess Vilhelmine Marie's gold bracelet with stones from the Vesuvius area, that was purchased by Frederik VII in 1828 before their wedding.

It came with a romantic French inscription that read: "It is from the summit of the flaming Vesuvius that my heart flies to you."

The Danish Queen paired the historical jewels with a stunning black lace gown by one of her favourite designers, Jesper Høvring.

The elegant dress featured intricate gold leaf detailing with a matching waistband and semi-sheer sleeves.

Royal fashion enthusiasts noted that Mary had previously worn the same gown for a New Year's Eve party at the palace in Copenhagen in 2019.

The King complemented his wife's attire in a smart black tuxedo with a white cummerbund.

Queen Mary also displayed her Grand Cross of the Order of the White Rose of Finland during the formal occasion.

The royal couple's state visit to Finland included several formal engagements before the gala dinner.

King Frederik spoke about the connection between Denmark and Finland during his speech at the banquet. He said: "Finland and Denmark are part of the same family. We are Nordic brothers and sisters."

Before their official programme began, the couple enjoyed a romantic sleigh ride through the snow-covered Lapland in Saariselkä.

The two-day visit included an official welcome ceremony, a visit to Finland's Parliament and laying a wreath at Hietaniemi Cemetery.
