Queen Mary of Denmark has carried out her first solo engagement since she and her husband, King Frederik X took the throne.

Mary travelled to Cologne, Germany, to attend the Handball European Championships where she watched her country secure a silver medal.

The royal opted for a smart outfit choice to watch the game with a tailored maroon blazer matched with a cream blouse and black culottes.

The Danish Queen let her long, bouncy mahogany hair fall over round, pearl earrings and a dainty necklace.

She matched her whole outfit with a pair of light brown glasses and natural, rosy-cheeked make-up.

In an Instagram post from the official Danish Royal Family account, the Queen smiled from her royal box.

The post read: “It was a very close game. The picture was taken just before the second half started.

“Well fought Denmark. It was close and nerve wracking to watch. It has been an impressive effort put in by all of you at the European Championship.

A social media user stated: “I think it’s wonderful and modern that the Royal Family participates in such things…just because you’ve become King and Queen you don’t have to stop doing what you’ve always done and probably like, namely backing up our sport.”

Queen Mary is passionate about sports and is a keen equestrian having competed in several dressage events.

In an interview with the Financial Times, the Queen talked about her love for horses: “It’s always been a happy place for me in the stables.

“It’s a place where I’m just Mary. It’s very meditative.”
