The King announced he was diagnosed with cancer in February 2024

Queen Camilla has continued to "show her strength", according to royal commentators, after King Charles was forced to cancel several engagements following a "brief" visit to hospital on Friday.

The 76-year-old monarch experienced temporary side effects from his ongoing cancer treatment, which began early last year.

Nicholl said: "It just shows her strength and resilience and the fact that she's a remarkably positive person.

"If you look back at her time travelling up and down the country, she was always smiling for the crowds, always having a word of encouragement about the King, about his health battle."

Nicholl told Ok: "She is so strong, so resilient. She also has a great sense of herself and an ability to overcome all sorts of adversity."

These qualities became particularly evident during Charles's cancer treatment last year.

The expert added: "Not only was she having to care for King Charles, but she also had to stand in for him and carry out engagements on his behalf. And she had to reassure the public that their King was okay."

After Charles's cancer diagnosis was made public in February 2024, Buckingham Palace announced Camilla would step up with "a full programme of public duties".

From Queen Elizabeth II's death in September 2022 to Prince Harry's revealing memoir and the cancer diagnoses of both King Charles and Princess Catherine last year, Camilla has remained a source of unwavering strength, according to the expert.

Royal author Katie Nicholl describes Camilla as having "a rod of steel that runs through her".

The 77-year-old attended numerous high-profile events, including standing in for the King at the Royal Maundy Service at Worcester Cathedral last March.

Royal historian Hugo Vickers notes the significance: "The thought of Mrs Parker Bowles distributing the Maundy money 25 years ago would have been risible. But there she was, the visible face of the monarchy."

Vickers adds that Camilla's acceptance was widespread: "She is the first consort of a monarch to distribute the Maundy money - and everybody was pleased that she was doing it."

Despite supporting Charles, Camilla maintained her own commitments to causes including domestic abuse and children's literacy.

In May, she hosted a reception at Buckingham Palace to re-launch her Wash Bag Project for sexual assault survivors.

Royal photographer Arthur Edwards observed how Camilla "calms down" Charles and "makes him laugh".
