As head of the Commonwealth, the King released a video message to the public, despite missing the service.
In his speech, King Charles said: "The Commonwealth family is strongest when we are connected, through friendship. As I have said before, the Commonwealth is like the wiring of a house, and its people, our energy and our ideas are the current that runs through those wires.
"Together and individually, we are strengthened by sharing perspectives and experiences, and by offering and borrowing the myriad ways we have each tackled the challenges of our time.

"I wanted to express my apologies for any confusion the family photograph we shared yesterday caused.
"I hope everyone celebrating had a very happy Mother’s Day. C"
But for some an apology does not go far enough and there are demands for the unedited picture to be released.
The anti-monarchy group Republic have demanded that the image is made public, writing on social media: "It’s a press office statement that doesn’t really explain anything. Hope you’ll be asking for the original."
