A new poll revealed public opinion over members of the Royal Family and attitudes towards the institution of the monarchy

  • The YouGov poll found that Queen Camilla is the least popular senior working member of the family
  • Young people, Labour voters and Scottish people all hold more negative opinions of the Royal Family
  • Overall around half of Britons (56 per cent) hold a positive view of the monarchy

Queen Camilla has suffered a crushing popularity blow as our polling analysis exposes alarming trends for the Royal Family.

A new YouGov poll on the favourability of the Royal Family shows that the monarchy is failing to gain popularity amongst young people, Labour voters and Scots

A poll by YouGov surveyed 2053 British adults on their opinions about the Royal Family from May 1 to May 2.

It found that Queen Camilla is the least popular senior working member of the Royal Family.

Princess Kate, Prince William, Princess Anne, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh and her husband, King Charles were all more favourable to the public than the Queen.

Camilla's highest popular rating came from Conservative voters at 68 per cent while only 39 per cent of Labour votes held a positive view of the King’s wife.

Although the Queen holds the lowest positive rating of the central family members her popularity has greatly increased since marrying the King in 2005.

The passionate relationship between Charles and Camilla while he was married to Princess Diana made for a rocky start to Camilla’s public image.

After all, Diana famously called Camilla the “third person” in her marriage to the then Prince of Wales.

In 1997, the same year as Princess Diana’s death, a poll showed 57 per cent of people had an unfavourable opinion of Camilla which has reduced to 38 per cent in 2024.

However, as the polls show, the Queen has some way to go before breaking into the top 5 most popular royals.

In general, there are some concerning statistics about the popularity of the Royal Family amongst the younger people questioning the role of the monarchy for future generations.

The Royal Family is least popular amongst those aged 18 to 24 with almost half (47 per cent) of respondents holding an unfavourable opinion of the family while just over half (51%) of those aged 25 to 49 hold a positive view of the family.

Furthermore, 43 per cent of young people hold a negative opinion of the monarch and 52 per cent do not like the Queen.

However, the family may see a rise in popularity amongst young people when the Prince and Princess of Wales accede to the throne as Kate and William are the two most popular royals amongst those aged 18 to 24.

Politically, the Royal Family is least popular amongst Labour voters who hold a 43 per cent favourable opinion for the family compared to 66 per cent amongst Liberal Democrats and 85 per cent of Conservatives.

When asked about the institution of the monarchy in general the rating dives even lower amongst Labour voters with only 39 per cent of respondents approving of it.

Geographically, respondents from Scotland hold the least positive views of the Royal Family with only 44 per cent of Scottish respondents holding a positive view of the family compared to 62 per cent in both Wales and England.

Respondents from Wales hold the highest favourable ratings for nine out of twelve Royal Family members included in the poll.

However, when asked about the institution of the monarchy in general, 57 per cent of respondents from Wales held a positive opinion compared to 58 per cent from England.

This suggests that the respondents from Wales care about the individual members of the Royal Family over the institution as a whole.

The two youngest royals on the poll, Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice, scored lower than the Queen with 37 per cent of Britons liking Sarah Ferguson’s daughters.

However, 37-38 per cent of the respondents answered “don’t know” when asked whether they held a negative or positive opinion about the royal sisters.

The percentage of “don’t know” responses for Beatrice and Eugenie is higher than any other royal on the list, suggesting that the sisters may not be as widely recognised as other working members of the family.

The relationship between Eugenie and Beatrice and their father Prince Andrew may also harm the princesses in the polls.

Prince Andrew remains the least favoured member of the Royal Family with 86 per cent of respondents holding a negative view of the King’s brother.
