The Princess of York could be called upon as a replacement royal for the Princess of Wales if she is unable to present the singles trophies at the weekend

Princess Beatrice and British actor Stephen Fry shared a touching moment at Wimbledon today.

The Princess of York attended Day 9 of the tennis tournament alongside her husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi and was visibly gripped by the compelling matches that unfolded in front of a packed crowd.

The royal couple were sat directly in front of British comedians Stephen Fry and Michael Mcintyre at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club.

Beatrice and Fry shared a warm handshake as they recognised one another at the event.

The Princess of York's appearance today ended the Royal Family's hiatus from Wimbledon this year.

Senior royals have deep links to Wimbledon and the Princess of Wales has been patron of the All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club since 2016.

However, appearances from members of the Royal Family have been unusually lacking during the tennis tournament this summer.

Princess Catherine's parents, Carole and Michael Middleton attended Day Four of Wimbledon last Thursday.

No senior members of the Royal Family have attended the event so far.

It remains to be seen whether the Princess of Wales will present the singles trophies to the winners over the weekend.

Kensington Palace and Wimbledon have not confirmed whether the royal will step out in the coming days.

Princess Catherine has only made one public appearance this year, which came last month at Trooping the Colour.

The royal was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year and has stepped back from royal duties for the foreseeable future.

However, the Palace did indicate Kate was planning to undertake two or three engagements this summer.

As Wimbledon is a competition close to her heart, the Princess of Wales may choose the tennis tournament as her next public appearance.
