The Princess Royal was hospitalised last month after suffering a blow to the head

Princess Anne is missing an exciting event in Scotland today as the royal was forced to step back after sustaining minor head injuries.

The Princess Royal was hospitalised last month after suffering minor injuries from a blow to the head from a horse on her Gatcombe Park estate.

As a result, she has stepped away from public life for the time being and is recovering at her property in Gloucestershire.

This week, King Charles and Queen Camilla will spend time in Scotland for Holyrood Week, which the Princess Royal, 73, usually attends every year.

Taking to social media today, the Royal Family posted: "This week, The King and Queen will spend time at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Scotland celebrating Scottish culture, achievement and community.

"Their Majesties will celebrate the best of Scotland, meeting Scots from all walks of life and hosting thousands at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in recognition of their good work."

Princess Anne said she was "deeply saddened" to miss a memorial ceremony in Canada on Monday.

In her first public comments since the accident, the Princess Royal expressed her regret that she could not be in attendance at the service in Newfoundland.

She had been intending to travel there to attend the repatriation of the remains of a Canadian soldier who died on the battlefields of Northern France in the First World War.

Canada's Governor General read some remarks made by the princess in her absence at the ceremony.

He said: "It is with deep regret that I am unable to be with you today, as you commemorate the brave efforts and sacrifices of the members of the Newfoundland Regiment who went into battle on the first day of the Somme.

"I have fond memories of joining you in 2016, on the 99th occasion that the people of this Island commemorated the Battle of Beaumont Hamel, and I am deeply saddened that I’m unable to join you again, and I send you my warmest best wishes on this special day of commemoration."

Her husband, Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence, confirmed that Anne is "recovering slowly" following the accident.

Sir Timothy went on to praise the medical staff who looked after her at Southmead Hospital.
