Prince William left the audience in stitches tonight after making a joke about American actor Tom Cruise.

The Prince of Wales poked fun at his “fellow pilot” during a speech at the London Air Ambulance Gala in central London.

William began by thanking the American actor for his support at the charity gala which was held at the luxurious Raffles hotel.

The prince said: “I should also take this opportunity to give a mention to my - our - fellow pilot, Tom Cruise. Tom, huge thanks for supporting us tonight.”

Then the prince’s humorous side appeared as he jokingly asked Cruise not to destroy any of the charity’s helicopters.

William teased: “And Tom if you wouldn't mind not borrowing either of the new helicopters for the next Mission Impossible, it would be appreciated.

"We have all seen on our screens that - how can I put it - you seem to have a different take on 'normal wear and tear' to the rest of us. It's not the kind that buffs out."

During an action scene in Mission: Impossible - Fallout, two helicopters crash into each other and end up in flames on the side of a mountain.

The first Mission: Impossible came out in 1996 and since then there have been six more movies released starring Tom Cruise as agent, Ethan Hunt.

This was not the first joke that William made during his speech tonight as he also made light of his family’s health concerns.

The prince began his speech by thanking those who sent messages of support to his wife, Kate, and King Charles.

He said: “I'd like to take this opportunity to say thank you, also, for the kind messages of support for Catherine and for my father, especially in recent days. It means a great deal to us all.”

William then jested: “It's fair to say the past few weeks have had a rather 'medical' focus. So I thought I'd come to an air ambulance function to get away from it all.”

Despite the light-heartedness of William’s speech, the prince sent a solemn message appealing for new fleets to be added to the Air Ambulance charity so they can continue to save lives.

The prince revealed: “Our capital city needs a new fleet. And we are up against time. The clue really is in the appeal's name. By September, we need the two new red birds - decked with the latest kit such as night vision - in our skies.”

The Prince of Wales flew for the East Anglian Air Ambulance in 2015 after leaving his duties in the Armed Forces.
