The Prince of Wales attended the award ceremony alone on Sunday as Kate continues to recover at home

Prince William spoke for the first time on Princess Kate as he attended the 2024 Bafta awards last night.

The Princess of Wales was unable to make the ceremony as she continues to recover from her abdominal surgery at their home in Windsor.

Speaking to Elaine Bedel, chief executive of the Southbank Centre, Prince William talked about his wife’s absence mentioning that Kate was sorry that she could not be there.

William commented: “I’m sorry Catherine’s not here. She does love the Baftas.”

He also mentioned that he had not been able to watch as many of the nominated films as usual amidst his wife’s health concerns.

William explained: “I’ve done the fewest I’ve ever done before, with my wife it’s been a bit…hopefully we’ll catch up.”

He added: “I’ll make my list tonight.”

William also revealed that he and Kate usually watch films together: “All the ones I watch, she watches with me. So we go through it carefully.”

Last year, Princess Kate stunned on the red carpet at the Bafta awards in a white, one-shoulder dress from Alexander McQueen and long, black opera gloves.

The princess often wears Alexander McQueen designs to the Bafta awards; in 2011 she wore a lilac dress, cinched at the waist with a glittering belt and in 2017 she wore a floral, off-the-shoulder gown by the designer.

Prince William has been president of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) since 2010 and regularly attends British film events with his wife, Kate.

Opening the ceremony, Sara Putt, Bafta chair welcomed the prince to the event and sent well-wishes to Kate and the King.

“Thank you for being here tonight and for all your support helping Bafta deliver its mission.”

She added: “May I take this moment to send Her Royal Highness the Princess of Wales and His Majesty the King our very best wishes.”

Prince William has only recently stepped back into royal duties after a period of looking after his wife and his three children following the Kate's operation.
