Prince William has warned that a dangerous tipping point looms as he announces a new life insurance plan in South Africa.

The royal made a landmark speech at the 2024 United for Wildlife Global Showcase to combat wildlife crime warning that action must be taken to "prevent the dangerous tipping points that threaten our planet."

The Prince of Wales said: "These people do far more than protect wildlife. They are educators. They are community supporters. And they help regulate the sustainable use of natural resources.

"We cannot protect our planet without them, which is why this initiative aims to ensure that Rangers receive much-needed life insurance cover, giving them and their families reassurance that they are protected for the dangerous job they do.

"It will be led by those who protect nature, for those who protect nature."

Prince Williams refers to protecting the country's rangers as a life "insurance plan" to further the nation's shared mission of combatting wildlife crime.

United for Wildlife, Founded by Prince William and The Royal Foundation in 2013, is a global alliance of private sector, law enforcement, governments and not-for-profit organisations.

The group aims to raise awareness and target, disrupt and prevent cases of illegal wildlife trade.

The Ranger Welfare and Standards Initiative (RWSI) has been developed in partnership with the Game Rangers Association of Africa and Tusk Trust, of which The Prince of Wales is Patron.

Every day, tens of thousands of Rangers across the continent of Africa manage large areas of land and water, safeguarding some of the planet’s most iconic species and landscapes.

United for Wildlife is supporting a leadership development and capacity building initiative for 170 nature protectors across South Africa and will support leadership training for 60 nature protectors that will take place over the next two years in Kruger National Park.

South Africa is a world leader in disrupting illegal wildlife trade, and many of its initiatives have become the foundations of best practices worldwide.

The award, that will be attended by celebrities and politicians from across the world, especially those based in Africa, celebrates those who are dedicated to protecting the environment and combating climate change.

William met the South African President, Ramaphosa, earlier this week as it was confirmed the President would not attend the royal's landmark award ceremony.

Prince William is not joined by the Princess of Wales as she remains in the UK to focus on her cancer recovery.
