The Prince of Wales is visiting the Big Apple ahead of announcing the 2023 Earthshot finalists later today

Prince William has left New York students awestruck following an "incredible" interaction.

The 41-year-old joined students during his two-day visit to the Big Apple as he stepped into the waters of East River off Governor’s Island.

The Prince of Wales mingled with a number of people affiliated with the Billion Oyster Project.

A student told HELLO!: "It was pretty incredible. He was genuinely interested in all our work.

"This work is really important to all of us because we all live in New York City, this is our home."

A second added: "He wanted to learn everything.

"We taught him how to measure the oysters and introduced him to the different creatures."

Reflecting on the initiative, Prince William said: "It’s quite a clever initiative to use the fish to do the growing."

The father-of-three was particularly intrigued by the foundation of the oyster beds.

William was examining a manmade oyster bed off Brooklyn Bridge Peak.

It was created in an attempt to rebuild the natural habitat which once flourished in the Big Apple’s harbour.

However, the Prince of Wales is primarily in the United States for the latest Earthshot awards ceremony.

He said: "It’s so good to be back in the United States.

"No-one does optimism and ingenuity like the American people, so it’s only right we unveil this year’s Earthshot finalists in New York City.

"Eighty years ago the world came together in this great city to find a new way, through the UN, to solve our shared challenges.

"I know our generation can take the bold action we need to make changes towards a healthy and sustainable world.

"The challenge may feel huge, but as John F Kennedy taught us, we rise to the challenge not because it is easy, but because it is hard. And vital."

The 41-year-old met with Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso Mendoza to discuss the South American nation’s efforts to tackle climate change.

William also snapped a photo with United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres in the Big Apple.
