The Duke and Duchess of Sussex became engaged in 2017

Prince William is "committed" to finding Meghan Markle's £140,000 engagement ring, due to his promise to "preserve his mother's legacy", a jewellery expert has claimed.

The Duchess of Sussex has sparked controversy by forgoing her engagement ring from Prince Harry in recent weeks.

The duo became engaged in 2017, however, Meghan was not seen wearing her gorgeous sparkler for the entirety of the Invictus Games.

Jewellery expert Stefano Pietrini from Watches and Crystals spoke exclusively to GB News to explain why the 42-year-old has not worn her engagement ring recently.

He claimed: "Naturally divorce rumours have arisen regarding the removal of Meghan Markle’s engagement ring, however, it has been revealed that this removal has been completely unrelated to her relationship with the Duke of Sussex.

"Unfortunately, there have been issues with the setting of the ring which has resulted in the stones becoming loose.

"As two of the stones are part of Princess Diana’s collection there is even more urgency when it comes to protecting the ring.

"Any issues that risk the safety of these stones are immediately dealt with to prevent their loss and damage, which explains the recent absence of Meghan’s ring."

Pietrini suggested a reason for Prince William's worry about Meghan's missing ring.

He opined: "Prince William's primary concern for the location of Meghan’s engagement ring has solely to do with the sentimental attachment of the late Princess Diana’s diamonds.

"It is no surprise that William is committed to preserving the legacy of his mother, her jewellery being a large part of that.

"Diana ensured her collection was inherited by both William and Harry, so they have an even share of her jewellery.

"However, all pieces hold great value to her sons, so William’s concern regarding the location of the Duchess of Sussex’s engagement ring is unsurprising."

In terms of a valuation of the ring itself, Pietrini commented: "The ring is worth a total of approximately £140,000 with the central diamond, sourced from Botswana, attributing the highest value of £115,000.

"Surprisingly, the two smaller stones of Princess Diana’s, placed on either side of the central diamond, are valued at a lower figure of roughly £4,000 each.

"However, as these diamonds are part of Princess Diana’s collection they have a much higher historical value that will continue to rise due to their unmatched sentiment."
