Prince William is one of King Charles's councillors of state and the heir to the throne.
This position requires him to be present when the King is out of the country. However, a recent change in 2022 has provided some flexibility.
MPs backed a new law allowing Princess Anne and Prince Edward to stand in for King Charles at official engagements.
Royal commentator Ingrid Seward explained: "They were appointed as senior working royals who could deputise as well. So strictly William does not have to be here if they are."
Despite this, she added: "He could go abroad but might not be wise at this particular juncture."
