Irving said: "There's a great deal of feeling that William understands the mood and the reality on the ground far more than Charles ever will."

He added that the King has reached an agreement with Prince William and his wife so that the limelight is shared between them.

Irving told the Express: "They worked out a kind of accommodation of how much limelight each is going to be allowed, because Charles is always very jealous of other people stealing his limelight.

"He's worked out a deal now, whereby William and Kate can have an allotted percentage of the limelight."

It comes as a former staff member of the Royal Family has claimed Prince William is preparing a shake-up of the monarchy.

Paul Burrell interacted with a young Prince William when he worked for Princess Diana as her butler in the 1990s.

Burrell backed the royal to cut back the current administrative nature of the monarchy and labelled him a "radical thinker".

He said: "I think the King and Queen are going to rely on William and Kate more and more as time goes by.

"I think they will be introduced to more public engagements, representing the King and Queen on more overseas tours.

"Charles was building a bridge between his mother’s monarchy and his, but really in essence he was building a bridge to William and Kate’s monarchy and I think over the years we will see them become more high profile and doing more when the King and Queen don’t want to.

"It’s a natural progression, it’s a learning curve for William and Kate to get a hold of the reins of monarchy before they become King and Queen.

“They are apprentices in the firm who need to learn how to handle this when it comes their way."

He continued: "It’s an almighty responsibility when it does come their way. William is a radical thinker: he will shake things up and get to the bottom of the heart of monarchy.

"The King’s monarchy is very civil service top heavy. It’s very administrative. I think William will slash that and cut it all back."
