Prince William has revealed why he and Princess Kate did not attend the Paris Olympic Games.

The Prince of Wales, 42, visited Birtley Community Pool today to celebrate its reopening and highlight the importance of access to swimming.

Prince William spoke to professional swimmers Adam Peaty and Tom Dean at the community pool to highlight the Royal Foundation’s work within the sector.

The father-of-three revealed in the conversation why he and his wife, the Princess of Wales, did not attend the Paris Olympic Games.

GB News understands that at the time of the Olympics, Kate was still undergoing her course of preventative chemotherapy.

Prince William's fears of bringing Covid-19 home to his wife were a factor when making his decision, as chemotherapy can decrease immunity levels.

Dean asked the prince: "Did you manage to get out there [to Paris]?"

William responded: "No I was so keen to come but I have to say after reading someone’s interview about Covid [looking at Adam Peaty - who tested positive during the games] I decided, because my wife was obviously having chemo, that I didn’t want to risk bringing Covid home, so Adam very kindly reminded me that that was still a thing! But we watched the whole thing. We were glued to it every day."

Several other members of the Royal Family attended the Olympics, including Princess Anne, Timothy Laurence, Prince Edward and the Duchess of Edinburgh.

Just last month, Kate announced in an emotional video that she had completed her course of chemotherapy.

Kate used the film, which included footage of her sharing family time with her husband and children in Norfolk, to announce she had completed her course of chemotherapy.

The Princess of Wales said the “path to healing and full recovery is long” and that she “must continue to take each day as it comes” as she looks ahead to returning to public duties.

The video, filmed in the woods and beaches of Norfolk, was hailed as a “groundbreaking moment” in how the Royal Family controls its image.

The footage was shot by filmmaker Will Warr over the summer and released by Kensington Palace in September.

It was set against audio of the princess’s heartfelt message, in which she confirmed she would return to a light programme of public duties following the completion of her chemotherapy course.

Online conspiracy theories began to escalate about Kate’s health in the months after her abdominal surgery at the start of the year when she was not seen in public.

The princess eventually delivered an emotional video message to the nation in March revealing she was undergoing chemotherapy after post-operative tests showed cancerous cells were present.
