The King did not attend the funeral today due to medical advice

The Prince of Wales has attended the funeral of Thomas Kingston, the son-in-law of Prince and Princess Michael of Kent, at the Chapel Royal at St James's Palace today.

Around 140 close family and friends of Lady Gabriella and the Kingston's attended the private family occasion, followed by a reception in St James's Palace.

Mr Kingston, who was 45, died from a "catastrophic head injury" and a gun was found near his body on February 25 at his parent's home, Gloucestershire Coroner's Court heard earlier this month.

The King, who continues to receive regular cancer treatment, could not attend due to medical advice.

The Queen was already committed to hosting a reception at Buckingham Palace, but The Duke of Kent and Princess Alexandra joined Prince William to represent the Royal Family at the service.

Thomas Kingston's coffin was brought from the chapel of Kensington Palace to the Chapel Royal, accompanied by close family.

The one hour service was led by the Sub-Dean of the Chapels Royal, the Revd Canon Paul Wright, with a sermon from the former Bishop of London, the Rt Revd Richard Chartres.

It is understood Mr Kingston is being cremated privately, and a final resting place will not be shared.

However, a larger scale memorial service for Thomas is expected to be held at a later date.

Mr Kingston's family described his death as a "great shock" and Lady Gabriella paid tribute to her husband in a joint statement with his family, describing him as an "exceptional man who lit up the lives of all who knew him".

King Charles and Queen Camilla also sent their "most heartfelt thoughts and prayers".
