The "inconvenient" timing comes in the middle of King Charles's royal tour

A royal commentator has criticised the timing of Prince Harry's new paperback book, released today, because it clashes with the King's royal tour.

Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams described the timing as "inconvenient" but is unsure if the prince or his publisher is responsible for the release date.

He said: "It is inconvenient, to put it mildly, that it is in the middle of a highly significant royal tour for King Charles.

"Some will see this as an example of the Sussexes, once again, seizing the limelight."

Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, stepped down from official royal duties in 2020.

They now live in California with their two children, Archie, five, and Lilibet, three.

This has caused Prince Harry to have a strained relationship with his brother, the Prince of Wales, and his father, King Charles.

Fitzwilliams added: "The Royal Family will be relieved he has not added any of the 400 pages he said he removed because they were too sensitive.

He continued: "Also, he is not giving any interviews to promote it.

"If he had, the optics, given that the memoir paints the Royal Family in a highly pejorative light, would have been terrible as the King and the Princess of Wales are both battling cancer."

The publisher is more commonly responsible for the release date than the author.

Spare's paperback edition was released today and will feature the same cover with no new content.

Prince William and Prince Harry

In January 2023, Prince Harry released the original autobiography Spare which contained multiple attacks on William and his brother's wife.

King Charles and Prince William are noticeably absent from the book's foreword, which remains unchanged from the hardback version.

The page is unchanged from the hardback edition and reads: "For Meg and Archie and Lili…and of course, my mother."

The book Spare, whose title reflects Harry's view that he is the 'spare to the heir', made headlines when it was first published in January 2023.

The original memoir, which explored the traumas of Harry's childhood, sold more than six million copies worldwide.
