The Duke of Sussex chose not to stay at a Royal Family residence during his two-day trip to the UK

Prince Harry was offered a royal residence to stay at during his recent trip to the UK.

The Duke of Sussex flew from the US to London on Tuesday and was in the capital for two days.

On Thursday evening, Harry flew to Nigeria from Heathrow Airport alongside his wife Meghan Markle.

The couple are currently undertaking a tour of the Commonwealth nation.

The King agreed to the Duke of Sussex's request to stay at a royal residence, according to a friend of the monarch.

However, Harry chose to stay at a hotel during his time in the UK.

The Sussexes no longer have a base in the UK after King Charles evicted the couple from Frogmore Cottage in the summer of 2023.

Harry and Meghan had barely used the royal residence since they stepped down as working members of the Royal Family and moved to the US in 2020 but would stay there when in the UK.

It comes after the Duke of Sussex's request to stay in a room at Windsor Castle was rejected in September 2023 with the Royal Family citing a lack of notice as the reason for the denial.

When Harry wants to visit the UK he must give 28 days' notice to King Charles and the Home Office to request security.

The royal's previous trip to the UK came in February 2024 after Buckingham Palace announced that King Charles had been diagnosed with cancer.

Harry was in the UK this week to attend an event at St Paul's Cathedral to mark the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games.

A friend of the King told the Times: "While it is true that the King is understandably wary about meeting with Harry, given the publicity circus that seems to surround all such visits, he did of course agree to see his son at the most vulnerable moment of his illness [in February], and at very short notice.

"While he was hardly going to roll out the red carpet the moment this Invictus trip was announced, with doctors advising him to focus on his treatment and recovery, the idea that he refused to find space in his diary … well, let’s say recollections may vary once again."

The King's youngest son released a statement on Tuesday confirming he would not see his father during his visit to London.
