The Duke of Sussex's relationships with his father and brother have deteriorated over the last few years

Prince Harry's return to the UK was a "painful mess" for the Royal Family, according to a royal commentator.

The Duke of Sussex was in the UK from Tuesday to Thursday last week.

Harry did not see any senior members of the Royal Family during his time in London.

The King's youngest son released a statement confirming that he would be unable to see his father due to the monarch's busy schedule.

A spokesperson for Harry said at the time: "In response to the many inquiries and continued speculation on whether or not the Duke will meet with his father while in the UK this week, it unfortunately will not be possible due to His Majesty’s full programme.

"The Duke of course is understanding of his father’s diary of commitments and various other priorities and hopes to see him soon."

Later in the week, Harry flew to Nigeria to undertake an overseas tour with his wife Meghan Markle.

Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams told GB News that the Sussexes will carry out further international engagements in the future.

He added that the Royal Family are content with Harry and Meghan doing their own thing.

Fitzwilliams said: “They [the Royal Family] have not got any choice, the Sussexes can do what they like.

“If they find it pays and they find it useful to their brand, which it is, then they will do more [overseas engagements].

“The main thing is a peaceful co-existence with the Royal Family.

“We saw what happened here [in the UK] with Harry and his father, it was a painful mess.

“The Royal Family are content that the Sussexes do their own thing.”

Harry and Meghan's tour of Nigeria was widely considered to be a success as they conducted engagements linked to the Invictus Games and mental health awareness.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped down as working members of the Royal Family in 2020.
