The Duke of Sussex recently told an ITV documentary that he refuses to bring his family to the United Kingdom over safety fears after the UK Government downgraded his police security
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have just announced a tour to Colombia at the invitation of Vice President Francia Márquez.
During their trip, Prince Harry and Meghan plan to speak with leaders, young people, and women who “embody the aspirations and voices of Colombians committed to progress“.
The visit precedes the first Global Ministerial Conference on Ending Violence Against Children, which is being held in November. Both Harry and Meghan have a passion for creating a safer online world.
Speaking of safety, both the UK and US Governments advise citizens against all but essential travel to parts of the country.
The Foreign Office says: “Terrorists are very likely to try and carry out attacks in Colombia.”
The UK Government also warns that “kidnapping rates remain high in Colombia”.
It added: “Illegal arms groups kidnap hostages - both for ransom and political purposes.”
But Prince Harry recently told an ITV documentary that he refuses to bring his family to the UK over safety fears after the UK Government downgraded his police security.
Meghan and Harry have announced an upcoming tour of Columbia
GettyPrince Harry said: "It only takes one loan actor [who reads negative stories about Harry and Meghan in the press] with a knife or acid.”
Following the tragic 1996 Dunblane School shooting, which killed 16 children and their teacher, handguns were banned in the United Kingdom.
But Colombia has suffered from internal armed conflict for more than half a century.
Does Prince Harry really feel safer in Colombia than he does in the UK?
Harry’s lawyers have previously argued that his paid US protection team is not permitted to carry firearms in the UK, therefore they cannot keep his family safe there.
ROYAL LATEST:
During their trip, Prince Harry and Meghan plan to speak with leaders, young people, and women who 'embody the aspirations and voices of Colombians committed to progress'
PAPresumably, in Colombia, his security team will be permitted to carry firearms (or the Colombian Government is providing extra protection) but does that necessarily keep him safer in a land infamous for its armed drug cartels?
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex plan to visit Colombia’s capital city Bogotá, as well as the Caribbean and Pacific regions of Cartagena and Cali, which to the Foreign Office does not advise against travelling.
For the King’s son, who continues his fight for security in the UK courts, it appears that he is willing to take the risk to highlight important charitable causes.
It is understood both Prince Harry and Meghan will be given a full security detail for the entirety of their visit alongside Colombia’s Vice President Márquez.
