A new government policy could leave Prince William and Princess Kate paying more than £75,000 a year for their three children

Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis' school fees are set to collectively soar over £75,000 as a result of Sir Keir Starmer's new legislation.

The new Prime Minister won a landslide victory in the July 4 General Election, with a manifesto that pledged to introduce a value-added tax (VAT) on private school fees.

The policy was also included in the King's Speech on Wednesday, which was delivered by the monarch, but written by the Government and outlined its agenda for the coming year.

The speech marked the State Opening of Parliament following a change from a Conservative to a Labour Government.

King Charles told the House of Lords: "Measures will be brought forward to remove the exemption from value-added tax for private school fees, which will enable the funding of six and a half thousand new teachers."

Once in place, parents at Lambrook School in Berkshire, which George, 10, Charlotte, nine, and Louis, six, attend as day pupils, will be expected to pay 20 per cent extra in tax.

This would add roughly £12,595 to the total bill the Prince and Princess of Wales would have to pay all three children, bringing it to more than £75,000.

For the school year 2023 to 2024, Kate and William paid £24,714 for Prince George's education, £22,767 for Charlotte's and £15,498 for Louis', according to the school website.

This came to a total of £62,979 for all three children across the entire school year.

Reports in The Telegraph have suggested there is strong opposition to the policy among parents of private school attendees, suggesting some schools might be at risk of closure.

However, polling by Ipsos in October showed 57 per cent of the British public was in favour, while only 18 per cent opposed.

Prince William and Kate will have a key decision to make in the next few years about whether the future King, Prince George, will go on to boarding school at Eton once he finishes Year 8 at Lambrook.

If George does go to Eton, following in William and Prince Harry's footsteps, his fees at current rates would be £17,583 per term, and £52,749 for the year.

After VAT is applied, however, George's bill would rise by £10,549 to £63,298.

A Government spokesperson has said regarding the new policy: "Education matters and is at the heart of our mission to break down barriers to opportunity so every child gets the best start in life.

"Ending tax breaks on private schools will help to raise revenue for essential public services, including delivering on our pledge to recruit 6,500 teachers."
