King Charles is hosting the annual pre-Christmas gathering later today

Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis are set to dine separately from their parents at today's traditional royal Christmas lunch at Buckingham Palace.

The young royals will join other royal children in their own special room for the festive meal, continuing a long-standing family tradition.

King Charles is hosting the annual pre-Christmas gathering, which has returned to Buckingham Palace after being held at Windsor Castle for the past two years.

The private family event, taking place ahead of next week's Christmas celebrations at Sandringham, marks one of the largest Royal Family gatherings of the year.

Around 70 members of the extended Royal Family are expected to attend today's festive gathering at the Palace.

The traditional pre-Christmas lunch has been a long-standing royal custom, typically held in the week before December 25.

The event is entirely private, with no photographs released from inside the celebrations.

The gathering features multiple dining tables, with former rugby player Mike Tindall previously revealing there were seven tables at a past lunch he attended.

During that occasion, Mike shared that he was seated at then-Prince Charles's table, describing the experience as "lovely."

Speaking on his rugby podcast in 2019, Mike offered a rare insight into the royal Christmas lunch arrangements.

"This is the family lunch, there were seven tables so there must have been about 70 of us there," he revealed.

He then disclosed a special arrangement for the youngest royals: "The kiddies have their own little one in a different room."

The setup means Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis will join their royal cousins, including Mike and Zara's children Mia, Lena and Lucas, at their dedicated children's table.

This separate dining arrangement has become a cherished tradition at the annual pre-Christmas gathering, allowing the young royals to enjoy their festive meal together.

While the children's dining room remains private, like the rest of the event, it represents a practical solution for accommodating the large number of Royal Family members present.

This arrangement has proven successful over the years, with Mike's revelations offering a rare glimpse into how the Royal Family manages such a large-scale family celebration.
