The Duke of Edinburgh recently returned from a trip to South Africa and Saint Helena

Prince Edward is taking a break from Royal Family duties as the King and Princess Kate recover from recent medical procedures.

The prince has recently returned home from his trip to South Africa and Saint Helena this month but will not be returning to royal duties for at least a week.

It comes during a pivotal week for the Royal Family as Princess Anne, Queen Camilla and the Duchess of Edinburgh are the only senior royal working members.

The Prince of Wales is also not able to perform any royal duties as he cares for his wife, Kate, and looks after their children.

Royal fans took to social media to express both their concern for the duke and their praise for him taking a well-earned rest.

It is recorded in the Royal Diary on The Royal Family’s website that the Duke of Edinburgh’s next appointment will not be until February 8, 2024.

One user wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “HRH The Duke of Edinburgh has done back-to-back engagements plus has been flying all over the world. Good on him for having a break. Rest up sir and enjoy your break."

Another royal fan said: "Hope he's okay. He and Sophie have been working so hard for a long while now, lots of overseas trips as well as UK engagements."

Earlier this month, Prince Edward flew to South Africa for a two-day working trip where he visited animal conversation groups and the Ambassador Maud Dlomo, DPG.

The duke then travelled to Saint Helena for four days where he met the world’s oldest living land animal, Jonathon the 191-year-old tortoise.

Edward was the first member of the Royal Family to visit the island since the Princess Royal travelled there 22 years ago in 2002.

Another social media user commented online: “It is eight days break. Not a long time. Hope he is okay."

While other members of the Royal Family are out of action, Princess Anne, the Duchess of Edinburgh and Queen Camilla are set to keep up royal engagements this week.

The Queen is expected to be out every day this week and the Duchess of Edinburgh is also set for a royal engagement in Surrey this week.

Princess Anne, who holds the reputation of the hardest-working member of the Royal Family, will be doing two or three engagements most days this week.

Both the King and the Princess of Wales will not be returning to royal duties for some time; Kate is not expected to return until after Easter and the King is set for a period of recuperation.
