Prince Edward will miss the annual Commonwealth Day Service next Monday as it coincides with his 61st birthday.

The Duke of Edinburgh's absence from the key royal event was confirmed by Buckingham Palace.

His wife, Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, will also be absent from the Westminster Abbey service.

The Duchess is scheduled to travel to New York on the same day, meaning both Edinburghs will be missing from the significant royal gathering.

King Charles is set to attend the annual Commonwealth Day Service on Monday, March 10, marking a significant public family reunion.

The monarch will be joined by several key royals at Westminster Abbey in London.

Last year, both His Majesty and Princess Kate missed this important event after being diagnosed with cancer.

The King's return to the service comes after Buckingham Palace announced his cancer diagnosis in February last year, while Kate revealed her diagnosis in a personal video message shared in March.

The King will be accompanied by the Prince and Princess of Wales at the service.

Queen Camilla, Princess Anne and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester will also be in attendance.

The Westminster Abbey event will showcase the unity of the working royals despite the notable absence of the Edinburghs.

This year's Commonwealth Day theme is "Together We Thrive", celebrating the "enduring spirit of the Commonwealth family".
