The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have recently brought a property in Portugal

Meghan Markle could follow one of her close friends by leaving the US after she was left "very upset" by Donald Trump's recent election victory, a royal expert has claimed.

Ellen DeGeneres, a close friend of Meghan, is reportedly planning to relocate to the Cotswolds from her home in California following the result of the November 5 poll.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are thought to be neighbours with Ellen, who also resides in California with their two children, Prince Archie, five, and Princess Lilibet, three.

The 66-year-old and her wife were pictured at Jeremy Clarkson's pub, The Farmer's Dog, in the Cotswolds last week and intend to "get the hell out" of the US, according to the Daily Mail.

The TV star previously influenced Meghan into adopting a Labrador-German Shepherd cross when they bumped into each other at a dog shelter in their neighbourhood.

Trump sealed his return to the White House by defeating Democratic candidate Kamala Harris in a thumping victory for the Republican.

The 78-year-old has made several damning statements about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in the past, often displaying his disapproval for how they treated the late Queen.

Speaking to GB News, Daily Mail Editor at Large Charlotte Griffiths said: "Meghan will be really upset to live in America with Trump as President.”

She added: "She really viscerally disliked him and for many different reasons, and has said that he's a misogynist live on television before.

“So she might want to leave America."

The royal couple recently brought a new home in Portugal near Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank's property in the Costa Terra Golf and Ocean Club.

The Sussexes are known to be close to Princess Eugenie, who featured in their 2022 Netflix series "Harry & Meghan".

The Princess of York was the first member of the Royal Family to be introduced to Meghan by the prince after they started dating.

Eugenie and Jack divide their time between Portugal and London with their two sons.

The property could be an ideal location for the Sussexes to relocate to allowing their children to grow up closer to the UK.

Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams said: "This gives Harry and Meghan a foothold in the EU and a base near Britain."
