The Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped down as working royals in 2020
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's return to the UK is "not impossible in the long term", however, the Duke of Sussex "believes he is owed an apology", a royal author exclusively told GB News.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped down as working members of the Royal Family in January 2020, and now live in California with their two children, Prince Archie, four, and Princess Lilibet, two.
The royal couple have only returned to the UK for major events like the late Queen's Platinum Jubilee and funeral, and Harry returned for his father's Coronation without Meghan in May.
Royal commentator Gareth Russell, who wrote The Palace, spoke exclusively to GB News to give his opinion on what would make the Sussexes return to the UK for good.
Russell claimed: "There was a poll recently on which there was a sizeable number, just over a third, who thought the Sussexes still had a positive role that they could play in the monarchy.
“As a historian, I would always say one of my few guiding principles with how history functions is to say there's no such thing as an inevitability and that things can change and shift and pivot all the time.
"It would be very unwise to say that the situation with the Sussexes could never change, as any situation could change.
“However, I would say there is a sizeable chunk of public opinion in Britain that is hostile to the Sussexes to varying degrees.

“There are some people who are very hostile and there are some who either are bored or irritated. I don't think that it's impossible that one day, there will be some kind of step towards a better relationship.
"But at the moment, I don't see anything coming from the Sussexes' camp that indicates that they want that."
Russell explained what the Duke of Sussex wants from his immediate family in order to heal the rift.
The royal historian said: “Prince Harry has been very clear that he believes he is owed an apology from his family.

Prince Harry believes he is owed an apology from his family, according to the royal commentator

“His family haven't said as much. They've made it very clear by their behaviour that I don’t think they feel he deserves one.
“And in that sense, that's a line in the sand, really. So I can't imagine that there's anything in the next few years that will see the Sussexes come back.
“If the Sussexes do come back to regular royal work and public service, it would indicate that their life in America had not been for them, that their business ventures had failed in which case I don't think it would necessarily be them negotiating from a position of comfort and strength.
“So no, I don't think there's anything that could happen in the short term that would mean you would see the Sussexes being back as a part of British public life, but I don't think that means it's impossible in the long term.”
