A royal commentator claims the Sussexes recent project will have stepped on the toes of Princess Kate

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been accused by a royal commentator of "trying to steal Kate's thunder" after their Columbia trip highlighted a project important to the Princess of Wales.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex completed a four-day tour of the South American country after being invited by vice president, Francia Marquez.

However, one royal expert suggests that Harry and Meghan may be stepping on Princess Kate's toes with specific projects.

The royal couple took part in a number of events which focused on promoting mental health for young people and discussed ways to combat cyberbullying.

Royal author, Tom Quinn said Harry and Meghan are "trying to steal Kate's thunder".

It comes as Kate takes a great interest in child welfare and in 2021, the Princess founded the Centre for Early Childhood, an initiative focussing on how the first five years of a child's life "fundamentally shape the adults we become".

"Francia Marquez, who issued the invitation to Meghan and Harry, praised the couples' Archewell Foundation and what she described as its 'global leadership in fostering a safer online environment'," Quinn told the Daily Express.

"This will have been music to Meghan's ears, but palace officials in the UK are irritated that once again Meghan and Harry are trying to steal Kate's thunder – Kate's interest in child welfare has always been central to her role in the Royal Family."

The Duke and Duchess visited Colegio La Giralda, a school in Bogota's Santa Fe locality (municipality) - a school said to be one of the top learning institutions in the world.

They were shown the school's "social and emotional gym" which offers a balance of both mental and physical exercises.

The trip also saw the Sussexes attend a Responsible Digital Future Summit - which hopes to bring together a diverse group who are united by a shared vision of a healthier and more ethical digital landscape.

Harry talked about how misinformation on social media can cause turmoil.

Princess Kate has previously talked about how important children's early learning years are to her.

During a 2019 gala for Action on Addiction, the Princess said the interest sparked up during her early years as a working royal.

She said: "For the last few years, I've been focusing on the importance of prevention. How can we all really support the earliest years of life, build foundations, and help avoid adversity later on in life?

"Having met so many people who've suffered from addiction, I have seen over and over again that, sadly, the root cause can so often be traced right back to the very earliest years of someone's life."
