The Duke and Duchess of Sussex remain close with the Princess of York

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's ties to Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice are unlikely to be enough to convince Netflix to renew their lucrative contract, according to a royal commentator.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex signed a lucrative contract with the streaming giant in 2020 after stepping down as working royals.

The Sussexes' debut series Harry & Meghan was a huge hit on the streaming platform and broke several Netflix records.

The couple discussed interactions with the Royal Family including Meghan Markle sharing her feelings on the first time she met Queen Elizabeth II.

However, it has been nearly two years since its release in December 2022 and the couple have only produced one other project for Netflix.

The Sussexes released Heart of the Invictus in August 2023 but it failed to reach the same level of success as their debut docuseries.

Their third project, titled POLO, will be released on December 10 but is not expected to achieve numbers close to their debut series.

As the couple's contract is set to expire next year, royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams told GB News that the Sussexes' strained relationship with senior members of the monarchy may make Netflix less likely to renew the deal due to a lack of interest in Harry and Meghan's projects away from royal life.

Fitzwilliams said: "Consider the position they are actually in, they only get on with Meghan's mother (Doria Ragland), Princess Eugenie and perhaps Princess Beatrice.

"It is a very curious situation and it does not look well if they monetise their royal connections.

"I think it might well have happened anyway as you cannot persist with negativity."

He continued: "Harry has got the problem with POLO that it is an elitist sport so it is not likely to do wonders.

"But what they do want is the Netflix contract renewed, whether that is renewed is pivotal for the Sussexes and they do not know at the moment."

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle did not feature in the official Netflix trailer for POLO.

However, a statement that read: "Executive produced by Prince Harry and Meghan, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex" did appear in the trailer.
