Tensions turned frosty between the royals following the couple's 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have “pivoted away” from making public digs at the royals, GB News’ Digital Royal Editor has said.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped down as working royals in 2020 and subsequently moved to Montecito with their two children Archie, five, and Lilibet, three.

Since they left the firm, the couple have launched “three high profile attacks” at the Royal Family which has resulted in tensions turning frosty.

However, now, the couple appear to have changed their tune and reeled back the jabs, GB News’ Digital Royal Editor Svar Nanan-Sen said.

He sat down with GB News’ Royal Correspondent Cameron Walker for this week’s episode of The Royal Record Episode to discuss the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s new approach to life as the prince’s 40th birthday looms.

Svar said: “There seems to be a bit of a pivot away from what the last few years were, which were public digs at the Royal family. We obviously saw three high-profile attacks, one being the Oprah Winfrey interview in March 2021. Then there was the Netflix documentary in December 2022, followed by Prince Harry's autobiography Spare in January, which was released in January 2023, and contained lots of personal information around his disputes with members of the Royal Family.

“So there was a period where Harry seemed kind of determined to hold the Royal Family to account on things that he felt weren't right.

“But since then, he's now kind of stepped away from that and seems to be pursuing a different type of career with Meghan Markle.”

Harry set up the Invictus Games in 2014, when he was still a working royal, and despite leaving the firm, the prince has continued to work with the sporting event.

The duke is also currently busy preparing for an upcoming trip to New York, where he is set to “advance a number of his patronages and philanthropic initiatives,” a spokesperson for the prince said.

Meanwhile, Meghan has launched a new lifestyle brand, American Riviera Orchard. She sent famous friends and influencers a jar of jam, with many sharing the product on social media. However, as of yet, nothing has been released to the public.

Cameron went on to add that Harry was being “ironic” in his behaviour towards his own family.

He said: “[Harry] had been very upset by what he would call intrusive stories written about him in the tabloid press, particularly here in the United Kingdom.

“And yet he was willing to spill the secrets of private conversations with private family members in the publication of the Netflix series Oprah and his memoir Spare as well. So there was a bit of irony there.

“He also said in some of the promotional interviews for Spare that there needs to be some acknowledgement from the Royal Family, particularly Charles, maybe William as well, if there's ever going to be any kind of reconciliation.”

In Spare, Harry wrote that his brother was critical of Meghan, allegedly calling her “difficult”, “rude” and “abrasive”.

The prince also slammed Queen Camilla, who he referred to as his “wicked stepmother”, and later Harry called her the “other woman”, saying meeting her was like an “injection”.

A friend of Camilla later revealed that she was left “hurt” by the remarks, and Charles reportedly asked Harry to stop “leaking” personal details about the private life of the family.

Cameron said: “Now the working royals have maintained a very, very dignified silence on most of Prince Harry's attacks. And in fact, from what I can recall, the only actual public statements about any of it was following the Oprah interview where the late Queen famously said recollections may vary when it came to Harry and Meghan's account of why they left as working members of the Royal Family.”

The relationship between Harry and the rest of his family has been strained since he and Meghan sat down for a bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey criticising aspects of the Royal Family in 2021.

“Since then, with the Netflix series and Spare, they have maintained absolute silence, which I think perhaps was telling, particularly when you look at the popularity ratings of Harry Meghan and members of the Royal Family,” Cameron continued.

“Despite attack after attack after attack, the royal family seemed to have maintained this level of public satisfaction with them, whereas Harry Meghan perhaps has gone downhill.”
